Safer than the Status Quo

When I was little
I trusted everyone.
When I could talk
They didn’t like what I said.
But I spoke of
What I saw.
But I saw those whom
I had trusted.
When I could understand
I understood the hurt.
The abandonment by those bigger than me.
The rejection of those I thought to admire.
It is lonely to be alone,
But it is safer than the status quo.
